In 2026, KAT General Hospital of Attica celebrates 63 years of continuous and successful operation (1963–2026).
KAT General Hospital of Attica is a general hospital with a special focus on trauma and emergency care. It operates under the 1st Regional Health Authority of Attica and has an authorized capacity of 650 beds.
The Hospital provides a wide range of high-level medical specialties and subspecialties within the Orthopedic, Surgical and Internal Medicine Divisions. Its clinics and departments tirelessly support the ongoing needs of Greece’s National Health System at a nationwide level. The specialized as Spine , Upper Limb Microsurgery, and Burn Plastic Surgery Departments provide continuous coverage.
KAT General Hospital operates an Emergency Department, which provides general orthopedic and specialized orthopedic (Spine/ Hand & Microsurgery/ Ped. Orthopedics) emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It participates daily in the on-duty system of the National Health Service, providing specialised emergency coverage, and every fourth day it is on full emergency duty, in accordance with the published schedule of the National Health Operations Centre and the National Centre for Emergency Care. The Emergency Department is staffed by a multidisciplinary, highly qualified scientific team and is equipped with specialised medical equipment to ensure the effective management of emergency cases.
The Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital forms part of the Medical Division of Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care. This Division includes two multidisciplinary Intensive Care Units, with a total capacity of 51 ICU beds and seven High-Dependency Unit beds.
In 2025, the Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital the treated 89,264 patients of whom thru EMS service were 10.806 patients. 11.333 were admitted to the Hospital.
The Emergency Department includes a patient Triage Office and an ambulatory Orthopedic Fast-Track Office.
The Resuscitation Room of the Emergency Department at KAT General Hospital is a dedicated five-bed Trauma and Resuscitation Bay, fully equipped (ICU level). Since 2004, it has been at the forefront of the Hospital’s emergency care services. It is staffed with experienced and appropriately trained medical and nursing personnel and is fully equipped to provide optimal resuscitation and management of patients with multiple traumatic injuries and/or critically ill patients from the Emergency Department or other Hospital departments who are in a critical condition or have unstable vital signs. The ED Resuscitation Bay possesses art of state modern medical technology equipment ,ICU level, that meets current international standards, ensuring the highest possible quality of healthcare services for patients treated in the Emergency Department and throughout the Hospital.
The resiliency to adapt in critical emergency conditions of the KAT hospital Emergency Department Resuscitation Bay was during 2022, thru Covid-19 pandemic, when the ICU hospital’s beds were only COVID-19.Then were treated a total of 1,046 trauma and/or critically ill patients, including 127 cases of cardiorespiratory arrest .From them a total of 320 critically ill patients requiring mechanical ventilatory support were treated in the Resuscitation Bay of the Emergency Department at KAT General Hospital.
In the same period , the Hospital’s Psychology Service was contacted by the Emergency Department medical staff to manage 136 cases requiring psychological support, involving 28 patients and 108 accompanying relatives at the Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital.
The Social Services Department provided support in 35 cases involving patients or accompanying persons at the Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital.
As a teaching hospital, KAT General Hospital provides high-level education, training and research across a range of medical, nursing and physiotherapy specialties and subspecialties. The Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital also contributes to the provision of highly regarded education and training in clinical practice and skills at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Training is provided to medical and nursing students from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as from universities abroad; physicians undergoing residenship training; physicians participating in continuing education programs at the National Centre for Emergency Care; nurses undertaking specialization training in Intensive Care and Emergency Nursing; students of the Athens National Centre for Emergency Care Public Vocational Training Institute completing practical training as emergency medical technicians; and students of the KAT General Hospital Public Vocational Training Institute completing practical training as Trauma Nursing Assistants, among others.
Provision is also made for the training of resident physicians in Orthopedics and Traumatology, General Surgery and Anesthesiology in Emergency Medicine within the Emergency Department, in accordance with Government Gazette Issue No. 4138/2018 and Government Gazette Issue No. 2384/2019.
The Emergency Department also participates in the ATLANTIS CEA KAPA Education shadowing program for international pre-medical students from the United States.
The Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital offers five physician positions within the pilot six-month Preliminary Clinical Training Program, which aims to provide participants with the skills required for the independent practice of medicine, in accordance with Ministerial Decision G5a/G.P.oik.11606/22.02.2023, published in Government Gazette Series B, Issue No. 2472/13.04.2023.
The Emergency Department of KAT General Hospital has also established a large voluntary team of healthcare professionals, comprising Hospital physicians and nurses with extensive experience in the management of trauma and/or critically ill patients, to assist in the response to mass-casualty incidents and major disasters.

What is the Emergency Department?
The Emergency Department is the Hospital department responsible for receiving, assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with emergency and acute medical conditions covering the full spectrum of illnesses and injuries. It is also responsible for managing patients until they are admitted to an appropriate department of the hospital.
In practical terms, it serves as the link between pre-hospital and in-hospital patient care. It also functions as a screening mechanism, protecting the Hospital from unnecessary admissions.
The principal tool used in this process is Triage thru the emergency severity index (ESI) , through which arriving patients are prioritised according to the severity of their condition.
Please note that arrival by an ambulance of the National Centre for Emergency Care does not automatically entitle a patient to priority treatment, in accordance with Government Gazette 874/B/20 March 2012.
Purpose of the Emergency Department
The purpose of the Emergency Department is to provide high-quality healthcare through accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Its primary guiding principle is the application of emergency medicine standards, with priority given to:
- Saving human life.
- Providing pain relief.
- Diagnosing illnesses and initiating treatment.
- Prioritizing incoming patients through triage according to the severity of their condition.
The Emergency Department also provides care within its own facilities for:
- Patients whose condition can be managed within a few hours without requiring hospital admission.
- Patients whose diagnosis remains uncertain, until the condition has been clarified and the appropriate course of management has been determined.
- Patients requiring immediate and advanced treatment, such as mechanical ventilatory support, cardiac monitoring or hemodynamic support. Such treatment is provided using the Department’s own equipment and facilities until the patient can be transferred to the appropriate Hospital unit.
- Patients of a possible Mass-Casualty Incident according to the response plan.
The Health Operations Centre of the National Centre for Emergency Care is continuously informed about Hospital bed occupancy and increased activity within the Emergency Department, so that ambulance services can be directed towards less heavily burdened healthcare facilities.
